Sliding Patio Doors: More Light, More Space and a Better View of Your Garden
Sliding Patio Doors: More Light, More Space and a Better View of Your Garden
There’s something about a large glazed door that completely changes a room.
More natural light. A better view of the garden. Easier access outside. And, perhaps most importantly, a feeling that your home is suddenly a little bigger.
That’s exactly what the VEKA Imagine Sliding Patio Door is designed to achieve.
At Heronhurst, we supply and professionally install Imagine PVC Sliding Patio Doors throughout Abergavenny and South Wales, with a working example on display at our Abergavenny Window and Door Studio.
Bring More of the Outside In
Modern homes are increasingly designed around the connection between indoor and outdoor living.
Kitchens open onto patios. Living rooms look out across gardens. Dining spaces become extensions of terraces and outdoor seating areas.
A sliding patio door is one of the simplest ways to create that connection.
The large glazed panels of the Imagine Patio Door help flood the room with natural daylight while providing a much wider view outside than a conventional back door.
And when the weather behaves itself — we are in Wales, after all — simply slide the door open and your garden becomes part of the living space.
Why Choose a Sliding Patio Door?
French doors and bifolding doors are both excellent choices, but a sliding patio door offers something slightly different.
The biggest advantage is that the door doesn't swing into or out of the room.
Instead, the opening sash slides horizontally along its track.
That means you don't need to leave space for an opening door leaf inside the house or on the patio.
It's particularly useful where:
Furniture sits close to the doorway
Patio space is limited
You want large areas of uninterrupted glass
You prefer a simple, easy-to-use opening
You want to maximise your view of the garden
For many homes, that straightforward sliding action is exactly what makes a patio door so practical.
Big Glass. Big Views.
One of the main attractions of the Imagine Sliding Patio Door is the amount of glass it can accommodate.
Depending upon the design, individual sashes can be manufactured up to around 1,400mm wide, with configurations available using up to four glazing panels.
That means an opening can potentially span several metres while still retaining the practical sliding operation people associate with a traditional patio door.
For reference, Heronhurst currently offers Imagine configurations including:
2-panel sliding patio doors up to approximately 3 metres wide
3-panel configurations up to approximately 4 metres
4-panel configurations up to approximately 5 metres
Final sizes depend on the exact design and specification chosen.
The result is lots of glass, plenty of daylight and a much stronger visual connection with the garden.
A Patio Door That Doesn't Take Over the Room
This is one area where sliding patio doors really earn their keep.
With French doors, you need room for the doors to swing.
With bifold doors, the door panels fold and stack to one side.
With the Imagine Patio Door, the opening panel simply slides behind or alongside the other panel.
That makes it particularly useful in kitchens, dining rooms and living areas where every bit of floor space matters.
You get the benefit of a large glazed opening without having to redesign the furniture around the door.
Two, Three or Four Panels
Not every opening is the same, so the Imagine system can be configured in several different ways.
Depending upon the size and layout of your opening, you can choose from two, three or four-panel designs, with options that can include more than one sliding sash.
This means we can design the door around:
The width of the opening
Where you want the opening section positioned
How you use the room
The position of furniture
Your patio or garden layout
How much ventilation and access you want
Rather than simply fitting the same patio door into every property, we can look at how you're actually going to use it.
Smooth, Easy Sliding
A patio door gets used a lot.
Breakfast outside. Letting the dog into the garden. Children running in and out. Carrying food onto the patio. Ventilating the house on a warm afternoon.
So it needs to be easy to operate.
The Imagine system is designed around a smooth inline sliding action, allowing large glazed panels to move without requiring the physical space of a conventional hinged door.
And because the sash stays within the footprint of the frame as it opens, you don't have a large door suddenly occupying half the patio.
Simple ideas are often the best ones.
Low Threshold Options
Access between the house and garden is becoming increasingly important when homeowners plan new doors.
The Imagine range includes different threshold options, including a low easy-access threshold which, when correctly designed and installed, can form part of a Part M compliant solution.
A lower threshold can make the transition between inside and outside easier, particularly for:
Pushchairs
Wheelchairs
People with reduced mobility
Young children
Anyone who simply prefers fewer trip hazards
The correct threshold will depend upon the property, external ground levels, weather exposure and installation detail, so it's something we assess as part of the overall design.
Keeping Your Home Warm
A large area of glass shouldn't automatically mean a cold room.
Modern sliding patio doors are very different from the aluminium and early PVC patio doors many people remember from decades ago.
The Imagine system uses a multi-chambered PVC profile together with modern insulated glazing and multiple weather seals.
With double glazing, configurations can achieve U-values as low as 1.4 W/m²K, while suitable triple-glazed designs can achieve figures as low as 1.2 W/m²K. Actual performance depends upon the size, glass and specification selected.
So you can enjoy a large glazed area without giving up the thermal performance expected from a modern replacement door.
Double or Triple Glazing?
Both options are available.
For many homes, a modern high-performance double-glazed unit provides an excellent balance of thermal performance, weight and cost.
Triple glazing can provide further thermal improvement and may be worth considering where energy efficiency is a particularly high priority.
The best option isn't automatically whichever has the greatest number of panes.
We look at the size of the door, orientation of the property, glass area and what you're trying to achieve before recommending the most appropriate glazing specification.
Designed to Keep the Weather Outside
South Wales isn't exactly known for its desert climate.
So a patio door needs to cope with wind and rain as well as sunshine.
The Imagine Sliding Patio Door uses multiple chambered profiles, brush seals and a specially designed multi-seal interlock where the sliding sections meet.
These features are designed to help keep warmth inside while resisting the weather outside.
Good installation is just as important, of course.
The frame needs to be correctly positioned, supported, sealed and drained if the complete system is going to perform as intended.
What About Security?
Large areas of glass can occasionally make homeowners nervous about security.
But modern patio doors are designed very differently from some of the older sliding doors still found in UK homes.
The Imagine Patio Door incorporates a purpose-designed locking system, with a PAS 24-ready locking kit available to create a strong barrier against forced entry.
The interlocking profile where the sliding panels meet also contributes to the strength of the overall system.
Glass specification can be considered as part of the security package too, depending upon the location and requirements of the property.
Colours Beyond White PVC
White PVC remains popular because it's clean, practical and works with almost anything.
But it certainly isn't your only option.
The Imagine Sliding Patio Door is available in a range of smooth and woodgrain finishes, allowing it to coordinate with both traditional and contemporary homes.
Grey finishes can give the door a more modern appearance, while woodgrain colours can work particularly well on traditional properties or alongside existing timber-style windows.
And if you're replacing several windows and doors at the same time, we can help create a coordinated look across the whole property.
Sliding Patio Door, French Doors or Bifolds?
We get asked this quite a lot.
There isn't really a universal winner.
Choose a sliding patio door if…
You want large areas of glass, excellent views and an opening that doesn't take up additional space.
Choose French doors if…
You like a more traditional appearance and want both doors to open fully.
Choose bifold doors if…
Creating the widest possible opening between your home and garden is the main priority.
For plenty of homes, though, sliding patio doors offer the sweet spot.
You still get an impressive amount of glass and a substantial opening, but with fewer moving panels and a wonderfully simple sliding action.
Perfect for Extensions and Renovations
Large sliding doors are particularly effective in:
Kitchen extensions
Open-plan kitchen/diners
Rear living rooms
Garden rooms
Renovation projects
Replacement conservatories
New-build properties
They work especially well where the purpose of the project is to bring more daylight into the centre of the house.
If you're extending across the rear of a property, for example, increasing the size of the room can sometimes reduce natural light further inside.
A large glazed patio door can help compensate by creating a much wider source of daylight.
Replacing an Older Patio Door
If you currently have an older sliding patio door, replacing it can make a surprisingly large difference.
Early patio doors often have:
Chunkier frames
Smaller glass areas
Basic locking systems
Older glazing
Worn rollers
Draughty interlocks
Large or awkward thresholds
A modern replacement can improve the appearance, operation, thermal performance and security of the opening while retaining the sliding-door format you already enjoy.
And because modern profiles and glazing have improved so much, the finished door can feel very different even when fitted into roughly the same opening.
Design Your Imagine Patio Door Before You Buy
Choosing a new patio door isn't always easy from a brochure.
Frame colour, glass area and the number of panels can dramatically change how the finished design looks.
At Heronhurst, you can use our 3D window and door design technology to explore different configurations and colours and even visualise your proposed doors on your own home.
It's a useful way to answer one of the biggest questions people have before ordering:
“What is this actually going to look like on my house?”
